Domaine du Serre-Biau is backed by a long family tradition of winegrowing. Generations of winemakers have produced wines here to reflect the abundance of the Côtes du Rhône Villages Laudun terroir.
Today the Domaine is in the hands of Elysabeth and Hervé FARAUD, who are devoted to the landscape and culture of their region, and use their knowledge of the old traditional methods to make characterful wines for every type of wine lover.
The Domaine is named for the hamlet in which it is located – Serre-Biau, Provençal for ‘Hill of Cattle’. The hill is one of rounded pebbles, bathed in sunshine and swept by the Mistral. Its wines are stylish with good concentration.
The vineyards span 11 hectares across the Côtes du Rhône Villages Laudun appellation, with a further 3 hectares for Vin de Pays du Gard. Average vine age is about 40 years. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan give its red wines an unmistakable flavour of the south.
Whites are made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Viognier. The Domaine’s terroir has the geological diversity to plant each varietal in the soil that best suits its needs; soils include red clay slopes, rounded pebbles, limestone scree and sand – all ideal for producing white wines.
The winery includes the original vinification cellar - an old stone building with impressively thick walls, modernised in 1925 by the present owner’s great grandfather. The current winery and bottling unit were constructed between 1980 and 1990 as an extension to the existing historic buildings.
Domaine de Serre-Biau hosts cultural events throughout the year, including tasting menus with food and wine pairings, introductions to wine-tasting and many other personalised events for family groups, friends or work gatherings, from 10 – 25 people.
